Assistant Principal's Message
Greetings Shoal Creek Family and Community,
It is an honor to be chosen to serve as Shoal Creek Elementary School’s assistant principal. I am thrilled to serve our school and community in this capacity. I am a proud educator with over 25 years of educational experience. I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. My family later moved to Decatur, Georgia. There is where I matriculated until graduating from high school. My desire to become an educator began in the third grade. My third-grade teacher was so inspirational. She encouraged her classes to begin thinking about and researching career choices at the tender age of eight. I held tight to that dream as I pursued my college career.
I attended Paine College in Augusta, GA and earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. I attended Lesley University to earn my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a Focus on Literacy. I earned my Specialist and Doctorate Degree from Argosy University where I studied Educational Leadership for both degrees.
I began my teaching career in the Clayton County School District. I served as a second-grade teacher for one year while there. I began my second year in education serving as a kindergarten teacher within the Dekalb School District. While serving in Dekalb, I taught all grades, except for third grade. I have served as an educator in Title I Schools, Non-Title I Schools, and Theme Schools. My passion for community service compelled me to serve in many capacities outside of teaching. My favorite roles include PTA President, Cub Scouts Facilitator, BETA Club Sponsor, and Girls Scouts Club Sponsor.
About midstream of my career, I transferred to Newton County School System where I served as a fourth-grade teacher for one year, then an academic coach for four years. Alongside this role I served as the BEST (Building Excellence in Supporting Teachers), Parental Involvement Chairperson, Title I Liaison, Site Administrator for our After School Tutorial Program, Site Coordinator for an After School Academic Program, and Sunshine Committee Chairperson. During this season, I established my own tutorial business (The Wright Method Tutorial Services, LLC.) to continue to help close achievement gaps during my personal time away from school.
During the pandemic, I transferred back to Dekalb County. Outside of serving as an academic coach, I began to serve as the site trainer for Illuminate and MAP. I led grade level data teams and served on the School Council as secretary. Other integral roles that prepared me for assistant principalship include serving as an Assistant Testing Coordinator, Gifted Liaison, Collaborative Planning Facilitator, Professional Learning Facilitator, and Title I Facilitator.
My hobbies include participating in community service opportunities with my Sorority (AKA/CTO), reading, traveling, bird watching (with binoculars), and sightseeing. My favorite places to shop are Amazon and Macys. My favorite restaurants are Longhorn and Subway. I am married to my high school sweetheart, and we have two grown children who both attended and graduated from Georgia State University. I enjoy sharing time with my family as well.
As you can see, I enjoy learning and building relationships! I am ready to build relationships with all parents and students and serve Shoal Creek as assistant principal where we are navigating the S.E.A.s (Serving in Excellence Always). It is a privilege to serve alongside Dr. Keyaneshia Richmond, and be a part of a community where parents, teachers and students genuinely care for one another and strive to build relationships conducive to supporting academic and social growth. With Pleasure,
Dr. Karen Wright
