Program Overview
The Academy for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) develops integrated hands-on inquiry based instruction through a myriad of real-world learning opportunities designed to increase critical thinking skills to prepare students for future college and career endeavors. Science and Technology are understood as the basis of what the world has to go forward with, to be analyzed and developed through Engineering and the Arts, with the knowledge that everything is based in elements of Mathematics. The Georgia Standards of Excellence and the STEAM framework co-support each other under a formal educational structure of how science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the broad spectrum of the arts all relate to each another in reality. This framework not only includes the art of aesthetics and design, but also the art divisions of the liberal, language, musical, physical and manual. The STEAM structure explains how all the divisions of education and life work together; therefore, it offers a formal place in the STEM structure for the Language Arts, Social Studies, and the purposeful integration of the exploratory subjects including the Arts, Music, and Physical Education divisions of public education. STEAM promotes deeper understanding and transference of knowledge across the subjects.
S - T - E - M with the A includes:
• sharing knowledge with communication and language arts, “voice” – impact, power, legacy
• a working knowledge of manual and physical arts, including how-to and fitness.
• better understanding the past and present cultures and aesthetics through the fine arts
• rhythmic and emotional use of math with the musical arts
• understanding sociological developments, human nature and ethics with the liberal arts.
Components for Student Success
Through STEAM pedagogy, students will hone their critical analysis, problem solving and higher order thinking skills through real world concepts. STEAM instruction will promote a deeper understanding of subject matter, inspire creativity and innovation.
In addition, our students will further develop interpersonal communication and collaboration skills, as well as an insightful understanding of societies and cultures.
A Message from the Principal
Welcome to Shoal Creek STEAM Academy where we are moving Full STEAM Ahead towards innovation and excellence!
Shoal Creek STEAM Academy is committed to providing students with a rigorous curriculum aligned to Georgia Standards of Excellence. It is our goal for each student to reach his or her full potential by providing enrichment and intervention support. Our staff is dedicated to working with students, parents and other stakeholders to ensure that all students have a successful academic experience.
STEAM Education is crucial to educate and prepare students to become competitive in our global society. Students at Shoal Creek are exposed to content that is motivating, engaging and practical. Students integrate and apply meaningful and important mathematical and scientific concepts through teaching methods that are inquiry-based and student-centered. Students are engaged in solving engineering challenges using an engineering design process. Teamwork and communication are a major focus. Throughout the program, students have the freedom to think critically, creatively and innovatively, as well as the opportunity to take risks and learn from mistakes in a safe environment.
Parental Involvement is welcomed and highly encouraged. Research shows that parental involvement benefits a child’s education. Outcomes of parental involvement include higher levels of achievement, positive attitudes, greater maturity, and more responsibility. Shoal Creek STEAM Academy strives to involve parents as much as possible through workshops, PTA programs, STEAM Day, STEAM Showcases, and volunteer opportunities.
We invite you to be our partner as we embark upon this educational journey towards innovation and excellence!
